Who it suits
Start with the number of drinks you make together. A couple of milk drinks in succession is a different buying problem from one espresso before work. Our view is that workflow matters more as the number of drinks rises; at the same time, an elaborate machine is not automatically worth buying for every household.
A prospective buyer should also decide whether they want an assisted everyday routine, hands-on experimentation, or both. Make that decision before comparing long feature lists.
What the upgrade changes
Reasons to shortlist it
- Brewing and steaming can overlap.
- Automatic grind adjustment goes beyond a suggestion.
- Auto and Manual modes offer different levels of involvement.
Questions to ask first
- Will you use the extra workflow capability regularly?
- Does its cost fit your complete coffee setup?
- Are you comfortable with an integrated, connected appliance?
Do not read automatic adjustment as a guarantee that every new bag of beans will taste exactly as you want. Decide what you expect automation to do, and leave room for your own preferences. A demonstration with the drinks you make at home is more useful than a generic promise of café results.
Buying and ownership checklist
Ask to see a full milk-drink sequence and the cleaning routine. Consider the machine as a long-term countertop appliance: check access, servicing arrangements in your country, replacement consumables and the retailer’s return terms. A cheaper purchase that suits your habits can be a better decision than stretching the budget for functions you seldom use.
Remote preheating may be useful to some routines, but should not be the sole reason to choose a machine. Check the current regional app requirements and connectivity details with Breville.
Compare it with the Oracle Jet
Read our Oracle Jet review before deciding. The key comparison here is simultaneous extraction and steaming versus the Jet’s ThermoJet and queue-based approach. Neither specification alone establishes which cup you will prefer.
If your usual drink is black filter coffee, take a step back and read the Fellow Aiden review and guide to brewing methods.
Quick questions
Does Auto Dial-In adjust the grind?
Breville says the BES995 monitors extractions and adjusts grind settings automatically to help the following shot.
Is it the same machine as every earlier Oracle?
No. Match information to BES995 and your regional version. This article concerns the current Oracle Dual Boiler, not an older Oracle model.
