How to use the numbers

For filter and French press, 1:16 is a starting recipe: one gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water. Use your brewer’s recipe if it specifies something different, then adjust to taste.

The cold-brew setting starts at 1:5 for concentrate. That is a stronger brew intended to be diluted to taste; it is not a ready-to-drink strength target. Espresso starts at 1:2 and calculates beverage yield, not reservoir water.

An example

For 500 ml of filter-brewing water at 1:16, weigh about 31.3 g coffee. If you start with 30 g coffee instead, the same ratio uses about 480 ml water.

Keep one variable steady

Weigh coffee rather than using a spoon when you want a repeatable recipe. Change the ratio or the grind first, rather than changing both together. Use the grind guide for starting settings.
